The band and vocal
students were recently introduced to Smartmusic.
What is it? Smartmusic is a computer
based accompaniment system that allows students to play or
sing along with piano, full orchestra, and jazz ensemble
accompaniment. We have been using it for solo performance
for the last few years, but now students can get a
subscription to use on their computers at home.
Smartmusic
contains every song in the books that we use for 5th-8th
grade band and it provides assessment tools. They can play
the song and it will show them what notes they missed,
incorrect rhythms, and correct fingerings. They can also
record their performance and make a CD or e-mail it to me
for my assessment. When they are working on solos for
festival, it will be like having their own accompanist at
home with them all the time.
Middle and High School students can
use it to practice solos for state music festivals or just
for fun. It also has a very good set of jazz improvisation
tracks.
This is also great for parents and
anyone else who would still like to play their instrument or
sing.
Since the school has a subscription
to Smartmusic, students qualify for the
student subscription rate of $20 per year if we have at
least 10 students subscribe. A microphone is also required
and the cost is $10. A foot pedal that allows hands free
operation is also available for $10 but it is optional.
For complete information and to view a
demo of the system, go to:

If you wish to order a
school sponsored subscription, please contact Mr. Hecht at
the school for information.
