The Santa Fe Railroad was put in place in 1870 which brought the popularity of the Santa Fe Trail down. The Santa Fe Trail was primarily used for traders and those going west. Burlingame was an important stop along the way for supplies. The Main Street running through Burlingame is part of the Santa Fe Trail. Burlingame was the first in the United States to have the Santa Fe Rail cross the Santa Fe Trail.

On the east edge of Burlingame US 56 crosses Switzler Creek, this was a major traill crossing. First called Bridge Creek, the creek was later named after John Switzler who had a toll bridge near this location. The Main Street running through Burlingame is the Santa Fe Trail. On this street there are several businesses named after this famous highway across Kansas.Carousel image
